The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in Limpopo says it
welcomes the suspensions of some of the VBS implicated officials
at two
municipalities, but they still want all accounting officers and mayors
who authorised investments into the mutual bank to be removed from their
positions.
The Greater Giyani Municipality has placed its Chief Financial
Officer on precautionary suspension and the Vhembe District municipality
has suspended its Chief Financial Officer and Municipal Manager for
failure to implement the Municipal Finance Management Act.
Samwu provincial secretary Patrick Aphane says the move by the
Greater Giyani Municipality to only suspend its CFO is avoiding
accountability.
Aphane says the suspensions are diverting attention from the real
culprits because some of these officials were initially suspended for
different reasons, before the revelations of events at VBS Mutual Bank.
